Pictage Partner Conference Workshop

See you at Pictage Partner Conference L.A.

I'm honored to be asked to speak at the 4th annual Partner Conference in LA this fall. I'm speaking on Leadership and how we are always influencing people no matter what we do, good or bad. We are also influencing or being influenced. Its so important not only to manage our influences, but to also recognize the power we have to influence, encourage, build up those around us (whether they are clients or our team members). In doing so as a business leader, we lift up our team and we serve our clients better, thus setting the tone for everyone around us.

Additionally I believe for photographers, whether its the day of a wedding, a single subject or family; how we lead, the qualities of our character, personality, patience, and our heart for our clients makes a HUGE difference in how we engage, their comfort and enjoyment level, and the direct result of our images.

Let me explain: During a wedding there is a fine line between being a reverent leader and being bossy or controlling. To be able to lead during the few times where the group needs direction, or to pull back and let the day flow without taking away any glory is so important. Bridal magazines usually don't talk about this as much as they could. I wish they asked more questions for brides to inquire about in this area. So much of what a great photographer does is behind the scenes and never noticed. I'm reminded of an event a few weeks ago, Where I had to step in and tell the DJ to call out the rest of the group of bridesmaids because he didn't see the bride waiving the shy group to join her. As a photographer, I'm looking through my viewfinder and I can see that she is not in her "comfort zone" she has switched to a director and therefore, its up to me to come in a "clutch" situation and connect the DJ with the Brides desires. Then I can go back and shoot and get the shots I need. She doesn't want me to shoot her while is stressed out. I needed to find a solution and get no credit. Thats what a leader does.

Its not about me, its about them. Its about engaging groups, but not taking away from the spotlight of the day. Its capturing whats going on, not directing or managing to much, but sometimes leading those who are shy. Then encouraging and helping the less comfortable people get into the mix and know that you are making them look good. There is so much I am still learning every day.

Those of you who are part of Pictage, come and check it out, its going to be great!

Excellent Post!

You're right, being a leader take s a wide variety of skills..and learning when to take charge and when to stand back to watch things evolve naturally is a skill that takes time to learn.

It's even more crucial when you're a photographer.
